Americans point with self-righteous anger at the appalling acts of Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, Communist China. We fail to recognize that we built this country upon the single greatest act of genocide in human history. Once Columbus set foot on Hispaniola he proceeded to murder eight million Arawaks, thus began five centuries of the methodical extermination of Native Americans by Christian Europeans. This so-called New World is the same old bloody one our ancestors brought with them.
Spencer G. Aubrey, 2018 AD. Starship Prometheus: Should We Go? International Journal of Scientists 105:22-10
What really distinguishes humans from other animals is we do not learn from our mistakes.

THE END OF CIVILIZATION?
In 3066 AD on the sea-covered planet of Thalassa; Albert Tyler, CEO of Pacific Hydrogen; is using this frontier world’s ocean for starship hydrogen fuel. But it has another resource: Thalassians, or mermaids―sea creatures who sang to humans before humans began killing them for food. Albert Tyler hires Isaac Chavira’s construction company to build a meat processing plant on Thalassa. A dark impulse drives Isaac ever further out on the frontier. He has pursued his life anesthetized by the hope someday, something will make him feel better. Here civilization ends―for him Thalassa is the end of the line. Nothing he’s done has made any difference until the night a Thalassian sings to him. Later he saves the creature’s life, injuring Albert Tyler in the process, who destroys Isaac’s life. Stranded, Isaac hires on as deputy for a tough woman marshal, beginning a dangerous and mysterious adventure on this wild frontier world. However, the Thalassians are not what they seem and an unprecedented event in human history is about to engulf this world along with Isaac and Albert. It will bring death to one and transformation for the other. It will begin the next step in human evolution.
“Mermaid Song has that great combination in a science fiction novel;
it’s a thrilling adventure wrapped in a great metaphor for our current
social condition. The story’s climactic and authentic ending is sure to
please even the non-science fiction fan.”
